Les corps de Lewy portent leur nom en l’honneur du Dr Friederich Heinrich Lewy qui a été le premier en 1912 à décrire ces structures qu’il avait découvertes dans les cerveaux de patients qui, au moment de leur décès, souffraient de la maladie de Parkinson. Elle représente 10 % des démences.

Elle partage des caractéristiques avec la maladie de Parkinson et la maladie d’Alzheimer.
Les diverses manifestations des symptômes sont directement liées à la répartition des corps de Lewy dans le cerveau.
On retrouve des troubles cognitifs avec des variations prononcées de l’attention et de la vigilance, des hallucinations visuelles récurrentes généralement très précises et détaillées et un syndrome extra-pyramidal.
